Self training was possible in RQ2 and in Mythworld. It takes some time to accomplish, but at least the monetary costs are low. However, it is restricted to strength, constitution, and dexterity only, but that brings along a lot of secondary characteristics once the primary one gets over the 8-9, 12-13, 16-17, etc. humps.
