All depends on the starting levels. As a rule of thumb
I consider that PC armor, on the average, should be
1/10 of their average main weapon skills. A warrior in
my games will start with about 4 point armor
(curboilli plus padding). I also like to run a
slightly above average magic game, so starting PCs
will have 8 to 12 pt of spirit magic. 

So, 4 AP + Prot 2 and a parry or dodge of about 40%+,
should make them survive the night, unless they get
criticaled or do stupid things.
