RQ Rules Digest: Thursday, 16 March 1995 Volume 01 : Number 153

RULES OF THE ROAD

1. Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially
not to say "Yeah, I agree." Those who do will be lynched.
2. Use an appropriate Subject line.
3. Do not engage in a point-by-point analysis or rebuttal of another
person's message. It is too confusing for others to follow,
qualifies as nit-picking, and it usually leads to flame wars.
4. There is no number 4.

Subject: banish piddly differences in skill defaults too

A few weeks ago I promised to enlighten the list on how I would
minimize the piddly little differences of skill category modifiers in
the character creation process. Surprisingly enough, nobody asked me
to actually follow up on this hollow promise. They must have thought
that posting the RQ4dr2 teaser would satisfy this geas. Wrong! But I
won't let that stop me. I'll post them anyway, even to the thundrous
silence of this audience.

The following skill lists were written up for a Melnibonean campaign
that went from the Stormbringer rules to the IMO superior RQ3 rules
a while ago, before the Elric rules came out.

Beginning Skill Values

To compute the beginning percentage in a skill, multiply the base
characteristic by the given value, 1 in case of x1, 3 in case of x3,
etc etc etc. This is the standard beginning value in a skill for a
character from the Young Kingdoms, and may vary depending upon noble
blood or the lack of it, literacy, and upbringing. Frex, If Greybeard
has a DEX of 6, then his Dodge and Sneak (both x3 skills) start at
18%.

Professional skills will begin at 1x when the character is a
beginning apprentice, 3x if the character is a beginning journeyman
(usual for player characters), and 5x for a new master.
