Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Walsh sorcery mods Loren Miller (Fwd) Sandy for Steve et al Loren Miller ADMIN: old mailing lists restored ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Loren Miller Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 01:03:14 -0400 (EDT) Subject: ADMIN: Finally got backups off tape I finally found backups and am currently working on recreating the correct versions of all mailing lists. I hope to have this work finished on Wednesday, the 3rd of May sometime around noon. Some of you will discover that you no longer receive mailing lists that you have received for a week or so, others may be returned to mailing lists you thought you unsubscribed from. Please accept my apologies in advance. I now know how to correctly use the program that created this mess, and it isn't the way it's documented to work. - -- +++++++++++++++++++++++23 Loren Miller "I don't have to practice what I preach 'cause I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to!" The Book of The Subgenius ------------------------------ From: "Gregory C. Walsh" Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 12:27:39 -0400 Subject: sorcery mods I am trying out a few modifications, have a few comments, and would like some from the list on my mods. First, I dont think I quite understand S.Perrin's magic system. As far as I can tell, you only need to learn one skill to cast sorcery spells. Which is nice for MGF. But then sorcery goes from being the path of Maximum resistance for power gamers to the path of least resistance. One skill only? Everyone would be a sorcerer. Obviously there is something I missed. Spirit magic mods: I am trying out a mod to Cerimony skill; and it reminds me of Steve's sorcery limitations. Spirit magic points are limited to Cerimony/10%. This way, to cast a Firearrow, you need at least a 20% Cerimony. I have also added functionality to the "magic" skill. I will post tommorow, I guess. Sorcery mods: I have decided to make damage resistance, when it fails, half as effective as Protection. So a Damage Resist 4 will at the least absorb 2 pts of damage. To counter the tank syndrome, I am using Sandy's Presence system with a few added touches (Overload skill, and so forth). I have eliminated Duration entirely, too. Anything that lasts will fix presence temporarily, limiting spell casting capacity. Sorcery mods (again): I am trying to figure out how to make Stupefy work. Any suggestions? Right now I am thinking of making it inverse beffudle, with two attempts a round to shake it off. You match pts of spell vs. free int. Greg ------------------------------ From: Loren Miller Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 14:26:27 -0400 (EDT) Subject: (Fwd) Sandy for Steve et al On Tuesday at 13:06 EDT Sandy sent a huge post which begins: > Steve Perrin complains: > >I, for one, would like to see your Tekumel spell list. > I've sent a bunch off. Watch incoming mail near you. > > >And weren't you going to send me some other stuff? > Yes. In fact, I'm so egotistical I'll just post it right > here in the rules digest. It has some Glorantha-specific stuff, but > tough. > > The advantages of my revised sorcery system are: > (a) No Duration. I hate Duration. It's time-consuming, > nit-picking, and makes my sorcerers tend to be more effective if > they act like minimaxing jerks. The use of Presence solves this > whole problem. > (b) If there's only _one_ skill to use with sorcery, then I > feel it's too easy to be a sorcerer. If there's a bunch, mebbe it's > too hard. I think I've got a happy medium. The only sorcery skills > that you care about are those of the individual spells. To cast, > just one single die roll. > (c) Because each spell's % skill is meaningful, a sorcerer > tends to have "favorite" spells. at which he is better, more expert, > which is an effect I like. "Don't mess with Subadim, he's an ace at > casting death spells." > (d) I've cut off Sandy's email here. I still have to check, but I believe all 1000 or so lines of the sorcery system have already been posted to this mailing list in the exact same form. I'll compare it to the sorcery system which is available from the mail archives by sending email to majordomo@hops.wharton.upenn.edu with "get rq-rules-digest petersen.sorcery.rules" in the first line of the message. If it is identical then I won't resend it. If it isn't identical then I'll send the changed portions to the list at large. I hope this will satisfy all interested parties. - -- +++++++++++++++++++++++23 Loren Miller "I don't have to practice what I preach 'cause I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to!" The Book of The Subgenius ------------------------------ From: Loren Miller Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 13:58:43 -0400 (EDT) Subject: ADMIN: old mailing lists restored To everybody on the glorantha-digest, rq-rules, rq-rules-digest, world-design, and world-design-digest mailing lists, Sorry about all the confusion. The old list contents have been successfully restored. I still have to sort out individual requests that some of you have sent to be retained on various lists. You can accelerate the process of subscribing to the right lists by sending email directly to majordomo@hops.wharton.upenn.edu with "subscribe listname" in the first line of the message. Naturally you would replace listname in the example with the real name of the list you want to join. And you can unsubscribe just as easily, just tell majordomo to "unsubscribe listname." - -- +++++++++++++++++++++++23 Loren Miller "I don't have to practice what I preach 'cause I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to!"
