Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. When paraphrasing you demonstrate exactly how well you understand the point someone was trying to make. 4. There is no number 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Henk Langeveld - ENS Europe ,id 21636,x15338" Date: Wed, 29 May 1996 11:32:48 +0200 (MET DST) Subject: stressful / non-stressful - BODGERS dice Lewis Jardine deliberately does not define what stressful and non-stressful conditions are, to protect the GM against rules- lawyers and the like. Non-stressful would be all situations where time is not an element. Why doesn't the Master carpenter worry about making a simple chest with drawers? In case of an accident, he can always start again. The chest will still be ready the next day. He will have wasted a piece of wood, can have damaged a tool, but these are the normal day-to-day business risks. When you're trapped in an ambush, there's no second chance: Stress. When you're going up for your final exams, the risk is to have to do it again in a year's time: Stress. Building that master-piece, using that unique piece of ivory: Stress... But what about penalties for a low to STR to SIZ ratio or benifits for high STR to SIZ ratios. ------------------------------ From: Allan Henderson Date: Wed, 29 May 1996 15:29:33 +0100 Subject: Spirit combat simulation Hi all, Sorry this is a bit numbers intensive, but here goes. There has been a lot of discussion going on about who to bet on in a spirit combat, and that set me thinking. I tired to work out the probabilities using statistics but realised I didn't have the expertise so I wrote a program to run trial combats. I present here the results of my trials. I reckon that due to shorcomings with the random number generator that I use that I have an approximate error of 0.1%. Each equal POW trial was done on a sample of 1,000,000 combats. Each mismatched POW trial was done on a sample of 2,000,000 combats. The POW figures were chosen to represent the following 11 : Average NPC 15 : Average initiate/PC 21 : Good Priest 30 : Temple guardian Spirit Spirit Wins for Wins for Draws Average A B A B rounds of Combat 11 11 48.4 49.1 2.5 8.11 15 15 50.1 48.8 1.1 10.57 21 21 49.6 50.1 0.3 13.90 30 30 51.0 49.0 0.0 18.68 11 15 4.4 95.2 0.4 7.24 11 21 0.0 100.0 0.0 6.21 11 30 0.0 100.0 0.0 6.21 15 21 0.56 99.4 0.04 8.76 15 30 0.0 100.0 0.0 8.33 21 30 0.0 100.0 0.0 11.53 So things that influence the outcome of any spirit combat seems to be the difference in POW (not really surprising) but also on the starting size of a spirit, presumable a couple of early successes don't count as much if you have to drive a spirit down from 30 MP. Hopefully, this will provide some help to those of you who design your own modules about the placing of huge temple spirits or large spirits commanded by enemy shamen. i.e. don't be surprised when the spirit of POW 24 proves more of a challenge than you expected. Notice that a 10 point difference results in NO victories in 1,000,000 trials. That is a bit of a shocker (to me at least). Allan The next thing to try is how many, footsoldiers will it take to defeat a much larger spirit if attacking sequentially. ------------------------------ End of RQ Rules Digest: V2 #264 ******************************* This is the bottom of the RuneQuest Rules Digest.
