Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. When paraphrasing you demonstrate exactly how well you understand the point someone was trying to make. 4. There is no number 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: dunham@pensee.com (David Dunham) Date: Fri, 19 Jul 1996 22:14:19 -0700 Subject: Re: beginners Richard Staats asked > what do most of you favor for backgrounds > and skills for starting characters of novice players? I liked the Griffin Island/Mountain idea of starting characters off as "cave men." It reduces the amount of stuff new players have to learn, and they can get a lot of sense of wonder finding out about the amazing magic of the citadel folk. Human, (I don't allow non-human PCs at all), but for novice players it's absolutely imperative. 2. Not too alien culture, something reasonably close to a real world culture the player is familiar with. 3. Strong ties to the "community" so that the character doesn't exist in a vacuum, but not too complex intrigues to begin with. 4. Medium skill levels, a novice character is too fragile for a novice player and an experienced master too complex. 5. As you say, magicians are usually more complex, so avoid them unless the player insists. ________________________________________________________________________ | Nils Weinander | Everything is dust in the wind | Office: nils@carasoft.se | | Home: nilsw@ibm.net | | WWW: http://www.angelfire.com/pages1/nilsw/index.html ------------------------------ From: Kevin Scantland Date: Sat, 20 Jul 1996 10:12:37 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: beginners When I first started RQ, it was in the Prax region. I was a lesser noble from the Garhound village. The game had started with others who had started in the Dragon Pass region called Apllelane then they had to leave due to the Lunar invasion. They ended up in Prax and thats when I joined up. The region is full of diversity and wonder. I had a great time playing. ------------------------------ End of RQ Rules Digest: V3 #8 ***************************** This is the bottom of the RuneQuest Rules Digest.
