RULES OF THE ROAD 1. Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. When paraphrasing you demonstrate exactly how well you understand the point someone was trying to make. 4. There is no number 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: SimonPhipp@aol.com Date: Mon, 5 Aug 1996 17:57:32 -0400 Subject: Re: Nonhumans as PCs, RQ2/3 conversion, Shadow CAts What's this? Activity on the RQ Rules List after so long - amazing. Simon Hibbs replies to Nils Weinander about non-human PCs. Well, I've been playing and running RQ for long enough that I don't care what species the PCs are in my campaign. However, for inexperienced players it can be daunting. The best bet is to put together a set of background notes regarding the general reactions of the species, their culture etc. If you have TrollPak you can play trolls, if you have Elder Secrets you can have a stab at most other races, Vikings covers Wind Children and so on. As long as the players do not play every creature as funny humans, I can't see a problem. RQ3 === When our campaign made the jump to RQ3 it caused no end of problems with skill changes, cult changes, problems with new skills, loss of spells and so on. At the time, I was only playing occasionally, so I was not in a position to make any rulings. Had I been the GM, I would have cherry-picked the rules, keeping the old skills but adding the new ones and so on. As Simon says, the magic system in RQ3 is far better than in RQ2, ENC is better, Fatigue stinks. The financial setting is far sounder, although I would tend to use RQ2 prices for spells. Combat is better on the whole, SRs work well, although I'd use 12 SR/round, Movement is excellent, far better than RQ2. Rune metals can be attuned in RQ3, in fact there are spells in Elder Secrets which allow Rune Metals to be attuned. This works far better than in RQ2 as there are specific spells for each cult. Control Spells =========== I would guess that it would depend on the creatures and spells involved. Creatures which are cult-summoned and controlled by cult spells would continue to do the last command, so a Yelm Salamander summoned by a Yelm Priest would continue to burn its target, then would leave. A spirit controlled by a Control (Spirit) spell would return to the Spirit Plane. Anything controlled by a Dominate spell would turn on the controller if it can, otherwise it would leave or even turn on the nearest potential foe - Dominate spells are not nice things to be under. We play that spells can be targeted by type, so a Dispel Magic could be aimed at controlling spells, protecting spells, weapon enhancing spells or whatever. Targeting at all spells means that the highest pointage spell is hit - if it cannot be dispalled, the Dispel bounces. Shadow Cats =========== JMack asked about Shadow Cats. Their stats are in the Gloranthan Bestiary, well worth buying. I've included them here. STR 2D6 CON 2D6+6 SIZ 1D6 INT 5 POW 2D6+6 DEX 3D6+12 Move 8 Claw (1D6 - 1D4) SR7 47% Bite (1D10 - 1D4) SR10 37% Rip (2D6 - 1D4) SR7 80% Shadow Cats attack with two claws and a bite each round, if a claw hits it holds on and rips with both hind feet and bites next round. Dodge 68% Hide 85% Sneak 100% They are often awakened by Orlanthi Priests and Lords as allied spirits and prove highly adept (having a species max POW of 38 and species max DEX of 45 - - amazing!!) Hope this helps - if you get a chance, buy the Gloranthan Bestiary - it is very good. Will this be magic-free or limited, or will there be different Magics for each of the 3 main religions (not to mention the various kinds of "heretics") that showed up in the Spain/Navarre/Provence area? ------------------------------ From: davidc@cs.uwa.edu.au (David Cake) Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 22:09:47 +0800 Subject: Re: shadow cats >hey i have a stats question. what are the stats for shadow cats? thanks Immense. I'll give the RQ pbem campaign a try. Give us an brief description (1 sentence each would do) on the world/region/races/history so a background will fit better. What cultures should we use for previous years experience? What is the maximum number of years or should it be a die roll? However the RQ4 project did show its first signs of life in some time recently, so don't give up hope.
